Resumo:  Partimos, nesta dissertação, de uma compreensão ampliada do colecionismo de Roberto Burle Marx (1909 – 1994), entre os anos de 1949 e 1994, quando adquiriu o Sítio Santo Antônio da Bica, atual Unidade Especial Centro Cultural Sítio Roberto Burle Marx, até sua morte. O Sítio constituiu-se como o lugar “ideal” encontrado e modificado por Burle Marx para compor sua morada, abrigo de suas crescentes coleções e laboratório paisagístico. Dessa forma, compreendemos que a categoria museu casa é pertinente à interpretação da identidade institucional do Sítio Roberto Burle Marx. Foi possível verificar a afinidade entre os valores do modernismo brasileiro e o colecionismo de cultura material produzido pelo artista paisagista e suas coleções botânicas. Buscamos, assim, reconhecer a tendência modernista primitivista como linha interpretativa para o colecionismo do artista paisagista, especialmente para a diversidade de objetos que compõem a sua ação colecionadora de cultura material. O estudo e a análise da trajetória social de Roberto Burle Marx como colecionador foram relacionados à biografia cultural e à trajetória social de quatro exemplares referentes a essa coleção, identificada como primitivista.

Abstract:  In this research, we start from an expanded understanding of the collecting of Roberto Burle Marx (1909 – 1994), between the years 1949 and 1994, when he acquired Sítio Santo Antônio da Bica, currently the Unidade Especial Centro Cultural Sítio Roberto Burle Marx, until his death. The site was the “ideal” place found and modified by Burle Marx to form his home, shelter for his growing collections and landscape laboratory. In this way, we understand that the house museum category is pertinent to the interpretation of the institutional identity of Sítio Burle Marx. It was possible to verify the affinity between the values of brazilian modernism and the collection of material culture produced by the landscape artist and his botanical collections. We thus seek to recognize the primitivist modernist tendency as an interpretative line for the landscape artist's collecting, especially for the diversity of objects that make up his collecting activity of material culture. The study and analysis of Roberto Burle Marx's social trajectory as a collector were related to the cultural biography and social trajectory of four specimens from this collection, identified as primitivist.
