The UNCCD 17th session of the Conference of the Parties will be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from August 17th through the 28th, 2026. The session aims to negotiate solutions to combat desertification and its challenges.
The UNCCD is one of the three pillar Conventions launched by the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The other two are the UNFCCC (climate change) and CBD (biodiversity). Unlike the UNFCCC COP that happens once a year, the UNCCD and CBD COPs happen once every two years.
The core framework of global environmental governance is structured around three complementary areas:
The discussions taking place this year in Mongolia are aligned with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), which brings visibility to ecosystems that have historically received insufficient attention. Although rangelands cover more than half of the planet and support the livelihoods of 500 million people, they are facing accelerated losses in biological productivity.
Under the theme “Restoring the Land. Restoring Hope.”, the UNCCD COP17 seeks to establish urgent action to reverse a global scenario in which land degradation affects up to 40% of the world's land area. The practical work and negotiation rounds will focus on the following targets:
The Brazil Pavilion, organized by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), will offer activities focused on the exchange of experiences and international cooperation on desertification, land degradation, and drought.
These activities are part of the programme of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17), to be held from August 17 to 28, 2026, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The full Brazil Pavilion programme is available here.
Brazil's participation in COP17 is coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and covers issues related to combating desertification, restoring degraded areas, and water security.
For Brazil, curbing the advance of desertification in its semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions, with particular attention to the Caatinga biome, is a strategic pillar for domestic food and water security, as well as for meeting international commitments.
