Passport for adults
The Brazilian passport is valid for 10 years. If a valid passport is lost or stolen, a new passport will be issued with a limited validity of four years, or even shorter in the case of a repeat passport.
A new passport can be applied for at any time, regardless of the expiration date of the previous passport.

For passports applied for by mail, the documents listed below must be sent to the consulate in original form by registered mail, along with confirmation of payment and a prepaid return envelope.

1) Online generated application protocol - fully completed and signed by the applicant
The application form for passport issuance/renewal can only be completed online (also in German). To do so, click this link: Link .
After you have completed the online form in full and submitted it electronically, you will receive an automatically generated protocol number (which consists of twelve digits - e.g., 190101-50XXXX). You will have the option of printing a confirmation sheet with a barcode or the online-generated application protocol (Recibo de Entrega de Requerimento). This must be signed by the applicant. Please also note your contact information on this application protocol.
If you are unable to print the application form, please write down the online generated form number on a piece of paper, sign it, and send it along.

2) A recent passport photo
A recent ICAO standard passport photograph (taken within the last month) (colour, without glasses, with a white background, frontal, centred shot of face and shoulders, with a minimum size of 3x4 cm) must be enclosed.
A passport photo taken at any photo booth can also be accepted, provided that the background is still white and that no shadow impairs the color photo.
3) Extract from the Brazilian civil register in original form
The extract from the Brazilian civil registry corresponds to a Brazilian civil registry certificate ("certidão de registro civil"), which shows the current civil status, as well as the name, ancestry, date and place of birth.
The Brazilian certificate registered with the relevant civil registry office in Brazil must be submitted. If the applicant's personal record is not yet registered with a civil registry office in Brazil (e.g., in the case of birth abroad, followed by registration exclusively at the Brazilian consulate) or if civil law changes were made abroad (e.g., through marriage abroad, followed by registration exclusively at the Brazilian consulate), the applicant's consular certificate must be submitted accordingly.
This corresponds to:
For single people : birth certificate (“certidão de nascimento”)
For married people : marriage certificate ("certidão de casamento")
For legally separated or divorced persons : marriage certificate, with a note about the separation or divorce ("certidão de casamento com averbação de separação ou divórcio")
For widows : marriage certificate with a note about the death of the deceased spouse or marriage certificate and death certificate of the deceased spouse ("certidão de casamento com averbação de viuvez, ou certidão de casamento e certidão de óbito do falecido conjuge")
4) The most recently issued Brazilian passport (in case of loss or theft, a police report must be enclosed)
A valid or expired passport must be presented. This will be canceled after processing and returned to the applicant.
If the Brazilian passport is no longer available, the applicant must file a police report of loss and send it to the consulate along with the other documents.
5) Brazilian identification document or subsidiary: Swiss residence permit/ID and/or foreign ID
If available, an original Brazilian identification document must be presented - e.g. the identification card (carteira de identidade - RG), the driving license (carteira de motorista - CNH), etc.
Subsidiarily, Swiss or third country officially issued documents can also be presented - e.g. residence permit or ID cards/passports
6) Regarding the Brazilian voting card ("Título de Eleitor": confirmation from the Brazilian electoral authority of regular voting eligibility ("comprovante de situação eleitoral regular") - essential for persons between 18 and 70 years of age
The confirmation of the applicant's regular eligibility to vote in Brazil ( "comprovante de situação eleitoral regular" ) is essential for persons between 18 and 70 years of age and can be accessed at any time directly on the website of the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court (Tribunal Superior Eleitoral - TSE).

If (i) the voting card has been canceled ("situação do título eleitoral: cancelado"), or (ii) the applicant has never previously registered for a Brazilian voting card, the applicant's voting eligibility must be regulated with the "Título de Eleitor" department before applying for a passport by mail. Only after the voting eligibility has been regulated can the passport application be processed in this regard. Please note: If the applicant does not have a valid Brazilian ID card with a recent photo, the passport and voting card must be booked on the same day. Please note that the first appointment for the voting card and the second appointment for the passport must be booked separately.
To apply for a new passport, the applicant may submit (within 90 days of the issuance of the elective title):
- the transcript received at the consulate;
- or the printed transcript received when completing the Título Net. However, only the transcript for which there are no problems will be accepted.
7) Brazilian Military ID - essential for men between 18 and 45 years old
Either the so-called CAM (“Certificado de Alistamento Militar”) or CDI (“Certificado de Dispensa de Incorporação”) must be presented.
If you no longer have it, please contact the Military Service Department directly to find out how to proceed. Please send an email to: militar.cgzurique@itamaraty.gov.br
If the applicant has never previously registered for Brazilian military service (which is completely independent of any possible registration for Swiss or other foreign military service), they must initiate this step before submitting the passport application by mail. 7) Brazilian Military ID - essential for men between 18 and 45 years old

Only after the applicant has properly registered for Brazilian military service can the passport application be processed. 3) Extract from the Brazilian civil registry or Brazilian birth certificate in original form
The minor's Brazilian birth certificate is essential and must be presented in its original form.
The Brazilian birth certificate, which is registered with the relevant civil registry office in Brazil, must be submitted. If the applicant's birth certificate is not yet registered with a civil registry office in Brazil (e.g., in the case of birth abroad, the registration is subsequently carried out exclusively at the Brazilian consulate), the minor's consular certificate must be submitted accordingly.
Swiss civil registry documents are not used for issuing a Brazilian passport and are not accepted for this purpose (e.g. Swiss family ID card, extract from the Swiss birth or marriage register, etc.).
4) Der zuletzt ausgestellte brasilianische Reisepass (im Fall von Verlust oder Diebstahl ist eine polizeiliche Meldeanzeige vorzulegen)
Der gültige oder bereits abgelaufene Reisepass ist vorzuweisen. Dieser wird nach der Bearbeitung entwertet und dem Gesuchsteller/der Gesuchstellerin zurückgegeben.
Falls kein Reisepass vorhanden: Erklärung der Eltern des Minderjährigen, dass der brasilianische Reisepass zum ersten Mal beantragt wird (das kommt v.a. bei Neugeborenen vor) oder polizeiliche Anzeige über den Passverlust.
5) Brasilianisches Identifikationsdokument oder subsidiär: Schweizer Aufenthaltsbewilligung/Ausweis oder ausländischer Ausweis
Falls vorhanden ist ein brasilianisches Identifikationsdokument in Originalform vorzuweisen - z.B. die Identifikationskarte (carteira de identidade - RG), u.a.
Subsidiär können auch Schweizer oder von einem dritten Land amtlich ausgestellte Ausweise vorgelegt werden - z.B. die Aufenthaltsbewilligung oder Ausweise wie ID-Karte oder Reisepass.
6) Schriftliche Zustimmung der Eltern im Bezug sowohl auf die Ausstellung des Reisepasses als auch auf die Reisegenehmigung für Brasilien
Mit ihrer unabdingbaren, schriftlichen Zustimmung genehmigen die Eltern die Ausstellung des Reisepasses des gemeinsamen Kindes und können gleichzeitig eine Reisegenehmigung des Mindesjährigen für Brasilien auf dem Reisepass vermerken lassen. Das dafür vorgesehene Formular ist auf diesem link abrufbar: Formular
Die Eltern müssen das erwähnte Formular vollständig ausfüllen (inkl. die Art der Reisegenehmigung auswählen - z.B. ob das Kind in Begleitung von einem der Eltern oder allein reisen darf). Die Unterschriften von beiden Elternteilen müssen entweder am Konsulat (kostenlos) oder bei einem beliebigen Schweizer Notar beglaubigt werden.
Wichtige Bemerkungen:
- Wenn das alleinige Sorgerecht nur einem Elternteil ausgesprochen wurde, muss der entsprechende behördliche/gerichtliche Entscheid beigelegt werden. In diesem Fall ist die Zustimmung des anderen Elternteils nicht mehr notwendig.
- Ist ein Elternteil vestorben, dann muss die Todesurkunde von diesem beigelegt werden.
7) Reisepässe bzw. Identifikationsdokumente der Eltern
Beizulegen ist auch eine Pässe/ID-Karte von beiden Elternteilen.

Das Beantragungsformular zur Ausstellung/Erneuerung des Reisepasses kann nur online ausgefüllt werden (auch auf Deutsch). Klicken Sie dafür auf diesem Link.
Nachdem das online-Formular vollständig ausgefüllt und es elektronisch zugesendet haben, erhalten Sie eine Protokollnummer (welche zwölfstellig gebildet ist - z.B. 190101-50XXXX) und Sie haben die Möglichkeit, ein Bestätigungsblatt mit Barcode bzw. das online generiertes Beantragungsprotokoll (Recibo de Entrega de Requerimento) drucken zu lassen. Dieses muss vom Gesuchsteller/von der Gesuchstellerin oder von einem Elternteil unterzeichnet werden. Bitte notieren Sie auch Ihre Kontaktangaben auf diesem Beantragungsprotokoll.
Falls Sie das Beantragungsprotokoll nicht drucken können, notieren Sie die online generierte Protokollnummer auf ein Blatt Papier, unterzeichnen Sie dieses und bringen Sie es bitte mit.

2) Ein aktuelles Passfoto
Ein aktuelles (innerhalb des letzten Monates gemacht) ICAO-Standard Passfoto (färbig, ohne Brille, mit weissem Hintergrund, frontale, zentrierte Aufnahme von Gesicht und Schultern, mit einer Mindestgrösse von 3x4 cm) ist vorzulegen.
Auch ein bei einem beliebigen Fotoautomat gemachtes Passfoto kann akzeptiert werden, wobei es zu beachten ist, dass der Hintergrund auch dann weiss ist und kein Schatten das farbige Foto beeinträchtigt.
3) Auszug aus dem brasilianischen Zivilregister bzw. brasilianische Geburtsurkunde in Originalform
Die brasilanische Geburtsurkunde des Minderjährigen ist unabdingbar und muss in Originalform vorgelegt werden.
Vorzulegen ist die brasilianische Geburtsurkunde, welche beim zuständigen Zivilstandsamt in Brasilien registriert ist. Besteht noch kein Personenregister des Gesuchstellers bei einem Zivilstandsamt in Brasilien (z.B. bei Geburt im Ausland, gefolgt von deren Eintragung ausschliesslich beim brasilianischen Konsulat), so ist entsprechend die konsularische Urkunde des Minderjährigen vorzulegen.
Swiss civil registry documents are not used for issuing a Brazilian passport and are not accepted for this purpose (e.g. Swiss family ID card, extract from the Swiss birth or marriage register, etc.).
4) The most recently issued Brazilian passport (in case of loss or theft, a police report must be presented)
A valid or expired passport must be presented. This will be canceled after processing and returned to the applicant.
If no passport is available: Declaration from the minor's parents that the Brazilian passport is being applied for for the first time (this is especially common with newborns) or police report of the loss of the passport.
5) Brazilian identification document or subsidiary: Swiss residence permit/ID or foreign ID
If available, a Brazilian identification document in original form must be presented - e.g. the identification card (carteira de identidade - RG), etc.
Subsidiarily, Swiss or officially issued documents from a third country can also be presented - e.g. a residence permit or documents such as an ID card or passport.
6) Written parental consent regarding both the issuance of the passport and the travel authorization for Brazil
With their mandatory written consent, the parents authorize the issuance of a passport for their child and can simultaneously have the minor's travel authorization for Brazil entered in the passport. The required form is available at this link: Form
Parents must complete the aforementioned form in full (including selecting the type of travel authorization—e.g., whether the child may travel accompanied by one of the parents or alone). The signatures of both parents must be certified either at the consulate (free of charge) or by any Swiss notary.
Important notes:
- If sole custody has been granted to only one parent, the relevant administrative/judicial decision must be presented. In this case, the consent of the other parent is no longer necessary.
- If one parent has died, the death certificate must be presented.
