- I've already filled in and sent in my form online. When can I receive my passport?
- Filling in the form electronically is part of the passport application process.
- Once you have filled in the form, you need to access the e-Consular system to digitally send the documentation required to apply for the service.
- Once the application has been validated by the Consulate, you can book an appointment or send the original documents by post.
- I got married in Japan, but I'm still single in Brazil. Can I apply with my birth certificate because I never got married in Brazil?
- The legal concept of marriage is universal, meaning that a marriage has international value, wherever it took place. The documentation must be regularized by registering the Japanese marriage certificate at the Consulate. The marriage registration certificate issued by the Consulate General is the document required to issue a passport.
- My son only speaks Japanese because he was born in Japan and doesn't understand any Portuguese. His passport expired last year and we already have a permanent visa for Japan. Does he need to renew his passport?
- No. Passports are not compulsory and can be renewed at your convenience. It is recommended that you keep your passport up to date for identification purposes.
- Why does my child's father need to sign the Authorization to Grant a Passport to a Minor if we are divorced?
- Minors cannot perform acts of civil life without the express authorization of both parents, even if they have separated or divorced. If one of the parents is unable or unwilling to sign the authorization, Brazilian judicial authorization must be obtained.
- In cases of death or removal of parental authority, proven by a Brazilian court decision or a legalized foreign court decision, the passport can be authorized by only one of the parents.
- Can I apply for my newborn son's passport without having registered his birth at the Consulate?
- No. In order to grant a passport to a minor born abroad, their birth must have been registered at the Consulate.
- If I have applied to lose my Brazilian nationality, am I entitled to a Brazilian travel document?
- Until the date of publication of the decree of loss of nationality in the Official Gazette, you will be entitled to a new travel document with regulatory validity. In this case, the passport will be issued with the following annotation: “The holder has requested the loss of Brazilian nationality. The validity of this travel document will end on the date of publication of the decree of loss of nationality."
- I have dual nationality. Which passport do I need to show to enter Brazil?
- It is recommended that you use your Brazilian passport when entering or leaving the country. For more information, consult the website of the Federal Police and/or the airline.
- I'm 46 years old. Do I have to show proof of discharge of military obligations?
- No. Military proof will be required for male applicants aged 18 to 45.
- Do I need to present my voter registration card, physical or digital, to issue a passport?
- If your voter registration is in order (check your electoral status here), only proof of discharge of electoral obligations will be required, for people aged 18 to 70, which can be obtained from this link.
- I got married and changed my name. Can I make a note in my passport?
- No. Biometric passports do not accept changes, so you need to get a new passport.
- Does my Japanese marriage certificate serve as proof of my name change?
- No. Only Brazilian documents are accepted, such as a marriage certificate or birth certificate with a marriage and name change annotation.
- I don't have a printer. Do I need to print out the protocol number or can I just write it down?
- The protocol number can be written down and presented to the consular officer.
- My passport hasn't expired yet. Can I apply for renewal?
- Renewal can be done at any time, at the holder's convenience.
- I haven't voted for many years. The status of my title is irregular on the TSE website. Can I still renew my passport?
- The voter registration card, as well as proof that you have fulfilled your electoral obligations, are mandatory documents for renewing your passport. In the absence of this document, or if the applicant is not in good standing, the Consulate may, exceptionally, issue a new passport. See more information here.
- I've lost my military document. Can I renew my passport without it?
- In the absence of a military document, the Consulate General consults the military justice database. If this is not possible, or if the applicant is not up to date with their obligations, regularization must be arranged.
- I'm going to apply for my minor son's passport by post. Do I need to have my parents' signatures notarized?
- Yes. All applications sent by post for a minor's passport must contain an authorization form, with the parents' signatures notarized by a Japanese notary public.
