Birth certificate
What it is
It is the registration at the Consulate of the birth of children of Brazilians abroad in order to obtain Brazilian nationality. Check out the general rules below:
- Birth registration (1st copy) is free of charge.
- Once the birth has been registered with the Japanese prefecture, there is no time limit for applying to the Brazilian Consulate. However, it is advisable to do so as soon as possible in order to keep your documentation up to date.
- Birth registration can only be carried out when there is no previous registration at another Consulate or at a Brazilian registry office.
- Children of Brazilians born abroad are Brazilians by birth, as long as they are registered with a Brazilian Consulate.
- The consular registration of the parents' marriage should preferably be done before the birth of the children, especially if there is a change of name.
- In order to produce legal effects in Brazil, the consular birth certificate must subsequently be transcribed (transferred) at the 1st Civil Registry Office of the respective domicile or at the 1st Civil Registry Office of the Federal District, in the absence of a Brazilian domicile.
- If the Brazilian mother or father has changed their name, they must present a Brazilian document proving the change.
- Once the Certificate has been issued by the Consulate, there is no way to make rectifications, deletions or additions to the records. Rectifications can only be made in Brazil by order of the Public Prosecutor's Office or a court ruling, as the case may be.

Children with dual nationality
The spelling and composition of the name in the Japanese document must be kept in the Brazilian consular registry. Names and surnames cannot be added, removed or changed.
Children of Brazilian fathers and mothers who do not hold Japanese nationality
The surname, which can be simple or compound, is freely chosen by the parents. According to Brazilian tradition, a person's name is made up of their first name, their mother's surname and then their father's surname. However, there is no impediment to changing this order or to using only the surname of one of the parents.
