Residence certificate
General Information
- The residence certificate proves, before the Federal Revenue Service, the Federal Police, or any other public or private body, that a certain citizen, Brazilian or foreign, resided abroad for a certain period of time.
- Although it is not mandatory, the presentation of the residence certificate to the Federal Revenue Service is usually required for exemption from customs fees when returning permanently to Brazil after uninterrupted residence abroad for a period longer than one year.
- In case of questions about customs procedures or payment of fees and taxes, consult the Federal Revenue Service.
- The period to be recorded in the residence certificate must necessarily be that which is duly proven by the citizen.
- The responsibility for checking whether the declared period meets the requirements demanded by the body to which the certificate is addressed, for example, the Federal Revenue Service or DETRAN, lies with the applicant.
- Those who only wish to prove their current address abroad must request a declaration of address. To request a residence certificate for a minor, click here.
