CPF
Since January 2024, the CPF has become mandatory for Brazilian citizens to obtain consular services, including requesting certificates and renewing passports.
In addition, Brazilians or foreigners of any age who own or wish to own, in Brazil, assets and rights subject to public registration, such as real estate, vehicles, vessels, aircraft, corporate interests or bank accounts must have a CPF registration.
The CPF registration number is assigned only once (it is unique and definitive), with no possibility of second registration. Anyone who has forgotten their CPF number must request it in Brazil, from the Federal Revenue Service. Further clarifications can be obtained by email: cpf.residente.exterior@rfb.gov.br.
Instructions for Brazilian citizens who wish to request the CPF registration are available here.

Mandatory update of CPF registration data
Starting January 13th 2025, all non-Brazilian citizens who already have a CPF number and live abroad must update annually their CPF registration data.
In order to do so, they must download the Receita Federal app on their mobile phones.
1. Insert their CPF number;
2. Take a selfie holding your passport bellow your face, keeping the identification page open;
3. Fill out the information requested.
Applicants who are unable to do so due to inconsistencies on their data should follow these procedures:
a) Send an e-mail to atos.cgwashington@itamaraty.gov.br attaching the following:
- printscreen of the error message generated by the Receita Federal app;
- Identification page of the passport or RNE/CRNM;
Foreigners who have an identification document issued by a Mercosul member or associated country may use it until June 30th, 2025. After that date, only passport photos will be accepted as identification.
