Registration of marriage celebrated outside Japan

What it is

This is the consular registration of a marriage celebrated outside Japan. It can only be done if the foreign certificate has been legalized by the Brazilian consular office responsible for the place where the document was issued. However, legalization is not necessary if the country is part of the Hague Apostille Convention.

How to apply

With the necessary documents in hand, schedule the service through the e-Consular system. Check out the system tutorial here. Once the appointment has been made, you will need to go in person to the Consulate and present the original documents.

Documents required

From the Brazilian spouse:

1	Form	Completed and signed Marriage Registration Form ⚠️ Disable your browser's pop-up blocker to open the form.
2	Marriage certificate	It must have been legalized by the Brazilian consular office responsible for the place where the document was issued ⚠️A legalization is not necessary if the country is part of the Hague Apostille Convention
3	Brazilian identity document	Original and copy of passport, ID or Brazilian driver's license
4	Proof of marital status	If single: 2nd copy of birth certificate, less than 6 months old If divorced: 2nd copy of Marriage Certificate with divorce annotation less than 6 months old If widowed: 2nd copy of Marriage Certificate less than 6 months old and Death Certificate of deceased spouse

From the foreign spouse:

1	Identity document	Valid passport, preferably, or identification document from the country of origin
2	Declaration of no previous marriage with a Brazilian	The document must be signed before the consular officer or have the signature notarized by the local authorities ⚠️ Disable your browser's pop-up blocker to open the declaration template.
3	Certificate (as appropriate)	If single: Birth certificate, preferably with place of birth and filiation romanized (certificates in English, Spanish or French do not need to be translated). If divorced: Marriage certificate with divorce annotation ⚠️ If divorced from a Brazilian, the divorce certificate must be presented from the STJ in Brazil, even if the marriage was not registered with a consulate. If widowed: Death certificate of the deceased spouse
