Consular legalization of documents
What it is
The Consulate General only legalizes documents issued by the Chamber of Commerce or documents that cannot be apostilled.
How to apply
With the necessary documents in hand, book the service through the e-Consular system. See a tutorial on the system here.
Consular Legalization
1) Documents from Chambers of Commerce
For commercial documents issued by import and export companies to produce legal effects in Brazil, they must first be legalized by the Chamber of Commerce and then by the Consulate.
Consular legalization consists of the recognition of the authenticity of the signature by officials of the Chamber of Commerce (Shoko Kaigisho) who work in the Consulate's jurisdiction. Legalization of the signature does not imply acceptance or approval of the content of the document.
Documents written in a foreign language must be translated by a sworn translator, duly registered with the Board of Trade of any Brazilian state.
2) Documents that cannot be apostilled
Documents that cannot receive the Hague Apostille must first be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Gaimusho, address below) and then legalized by the Consulate in order to take effect in Brazil.
