Transcription
Transcription is the registration of a foreign certificate (birth, marriage or death), previously registered abroad by a Brazilian Consulate, at a 1st Civil Registry Office in Brazil. This Office, called "1º Cartório de Registro Civil" in Portuguese, must be the one where the individual is domiciled or, in the absence of a defined domicile, the 1st Civil Registry Office of the Federal District.
Given that this process allows an act registered abroad to produce legal effects in national territory, it is recommended that the transcription be done upon arrival in Brazil, at the earliest convenience. Before being transcribed at a Brazilian registry office, however, any foreign document must be translated. Documents issued directly by a Brazilian Consulate do not need to be translated.
The transcription allows the individual to obtain a definitive registration, necessary for to issue Brazilian documents and many other aspects of civil life in Brazil.
It is advisable to contact the Brazilian registry office where you intend to carry out the registration, so as to obtain any necessary information beforehand.
