Translation program supports publishing Brazilian authors abroad
The Government of Brazil launched, on September 26, 2023, a new call for proposals for translating Brazilian books through the Program for the Support of Translation and Publication of Brazilian Authors Abroad, jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture, the National Library and the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil.
The 2023 program was launched in a ceremony at the Rio Branco Institute, Brazil’s diplomatic academy, with the presence of the Minister of Culture, Margareth Menezes; the president of the National Library Foundation, Marco Lucchesi; the director-general of the Rio Branco Institute, ambassador Glivânia Maria de Oliveira; and the director of the Guimarães Rosa Institute, minister Marco Antonio Nakata, as well as representatives of the diplomatic in Brasília.
The Ministry of Culture will destine R$ 1 million (US$ 200,000) in translation promotion initiative, which cover partial or full funding for:
- translation of works by Brazilian authors for publishing in other languages;
- editing and printing Brazilian authors in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries;
- translation, editing, and printing of comic books and works for the children and young adult segments.
Financial support will range from USD 1,000 to USD 6,000 for new or retranslation projects, and USD 3,000 for e-edition projects. In all cases, the support provided will be supplementary, with the publisher bearing the responsibility for the proposal.
