Marriage celebration at the Consular Office

General Information

The service may be requested by Brazilian nationals over the age of 16. At least one of the spouses must reside within the jurisdiction of the Embassy of Brazil in Lusaka.

For Brazilians under 18 (eighteen) years of age, parental consent from both parents or legal guardians is required.

For the marriage celebration, the presence of two adult witnesses is required. They must attest to knowing the spouses, confirm their residence and marital status, and declare the absence of any legal impediment to the marriage.

IMPORTANT: Notwithstanding Brazilian legislation, same-sex marriages can only be celebrated at consular offices located in countries that also allow the union of same-sex couples. Otherwise, applicants are advised to carry out the marriage in Brazil.

To request this service at the Embassy of Brazil in Lusaka, please gather the required documentation:

ATTENTION: Any document that does not allow full identification of the holder, whether due to age, erasure, or tear, will not be accepted and the request will be denied.

Documentation		Remarks
1	Application form for marriage registration, issuance, and publication of banns (pursuant to Articles 1.525 and following of the Brazilian Civil Code).	The [form] must be filled out before being printed and signed by the spouses.
2	Witnesses’ declaration	Declaration from two adult witnesses, relatives or not, attesting that they know the spouses, confirm their domicile(s), residence(s), and marital status, and affirm that there is no impediment to the marriage.
3	Prenuptial agreement, if applicable	Original prenuptial agreement executed before a consular office or notary public in Brazil.
4	Brazilian identity documents of the spouses	Original and copy of one of the following: Brazilian passport, even if expired, issued by the Federal Police or the MRE; Identity card (RG) issued by a State Department of Public Security; Professional ID card issued by a public body or regulatory body, legally recognized as valid throughout Brazil; Driver’s license (CNH), even if expired, issued by DETRAN; Indigenous identity card; FUNAI declaration attesting to the identity of a non-integrated indigenous person; Work and Social Security Card (CTPS); or Digital identity document legally recognized as valid throughout Brazil, such as CNH or DNI.
5	Proof of Brazilian nationality of the spouses	Original and copy of one of the following: Brazilian birth certificate; or Brazilian marriage certificate with divorce or death annotation, issued within the last six months, provided it explicitly states nationality; or Certificate or decree of naturalization (if applicable).
6	Proof of marital status of the spouses	Original and copy of one of the following: If single: Brazilian marriage certificate issued within the last 6 months; If divorced: Brazilian marriage certificate issued within the last 6 months with divorce annotation; If widowed: Brazilian marriage certificate with annotation of the death of the former spouse, issued within the last 6 months.
7	Witnesses’ identification document	Original and copy of a photo ID.

9	Consular fee	This service is free of charge.

How to apply

Requests must be submitted by email: consular.lusaca@itamaraty.gov.br.

Processing time

Up to 7 business days after receipt of the request at the Embassy of Brazil in Lusaka.

According to the Brazilian Civil Code, the marriage celebration ceremony may only take place within a minimum of 15 days and a maximum of 90 days from the date of submission of the documents.
