CPF update procedure for foreigners
The Special Secretariat of the Federal Revenue of Brazil - RFB (Receita Federal do Brasil) announced that throughout 2025 all foreigners (non-Brazilians) must update their CPF (Individual Taxpayer Registry or “Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas”) registration. This procedure must be repeated annually by foreign CPF holders with addresses abroad. The new service aims to maintain the integrity of the CPF database and thus prevent the misuse of registrations by third parties for fraudulent purposes.
All update services must be carried out through the Federal Revenue application, available for Android and iOS platforms. The updated version, with the functionality for foreigner re-registration, will be available starting January 13, when the process will begin.
To carry out the registration update procedure, the foreigner must download or update the Federal Revenue application and:
- Provide their CPF registration number and date of birth;
- Capture, through the RFB application, a photograph of the CPF holder's face and passport; and
- Fill in the registration information requested by the application.
If there is a discrepancy in the CPF data during the procedure via the application, it will not be possible to complete the re-registration. In this situation, the foreigner must personally visit a Brazilian Embassy or Consulate, necessarily presenting the error message generated by the application and one of the following documents:
- Passport;
- National Migration Registry Card (CRNM) or the old Foreigner Identity Card (CIE/RNE); or
- Until June 30, 2025, an identification document issued by Mercosur Member States and associated States; after this date, the presentation of a passport will be mandatory (art. 32-A of RFB Normative Instruction No. 2,236, of November 22, 2024).
