Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change
On November 19, 2024, Brazil, the United Nations, and UNESCO formalized, on the sidelines of the G20 leaders' summit in Rio de Janeiro, the launch of the " Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change." The event was attended by high-level representatives from the countries that have already joined the Initiative: Chile, Denmark, France, Morocco, the United Kingdom, and Sweden, as well as the UN and UNESCO.
It is a partnership of countries and international organizations, aimed at promoting and defending the integrity of information about climate change. The Initiative will promote the conduct of research and strategic actions and cooperation with organizations that operate in this domain, such as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and UNESCO itself.
In this context, the 'Global Fund for Climate Information Integrity' was established under UNESCO, aiming to finance networked research that contributes to identifying and addressing misinformation related to climate change. Brazil made the initial financial donation to this Fund, amounting to one million dollars.
On June 5, which is celebrated as "World Environment Day," UNESCO announced the launch of the first call for proposals for research projects that may be funded by the grant, which should focus on: (i) producing evidence on how climate change is impacted by misinformation; (ii) developing evidence-based communication strategies to combat these processes; and (iii) supporting investigative journalism initiatives that expose misleading narratives and promote public understanding in this area.
The deadline for submitting proposals ends on 6 July, 2025. The respective link containing rules and procedures for project registration is available at: https://www.unesco.org/en/information-integrity-climate-change/call-partnerships-2025.
