The Embassy
The Brazilian Embassy in Addis Ababa was originally opened in 1961, during the Ethiopian imperial period, having remained in operation for the entire 1960s decade, when it was closed in 1972 for budgetary reasons.
The Embassy reopened in 2005, making it the 107th foreign mission to settle in the current Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
In addition to representing Brazil in the host country, the Brazilian Embassy in Addis Ababa is accredited to the Governments of Djibouti and South Sudan.
At the multilateral level, the embassy acts as an observer to the African Union (AU), whose Commission is based in the Ethiopian capital, as well as following the work of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), which is also based in Addis Ababa, and the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), a trade bloc made up of eight East African countries (Horn of Africa, Nile Valley and the Great Lakes Region of Africa), with shared headquarters in Addis Ababa and Djibouti.
