Statement by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, Ambassador Norberto Moretti, at the briefing on the Humanitarian Situation from Hurricane Beryl
July 19th, 2024
I reiterate the full solidarity of the Brazilian government with all the countries and populations affected by Hurricane Beryl. We express our heartfelt condolences to all those who lost their loved ones.
Recent extreme weather events only further illustrate the urgent need to dramatically increase climate resilience, especially in developing countries. This is painfully clear to Brazil in the wake of the extensive human abd material losses in the Southern state of Rio Grande do Sul last April and May.
Such events only reinforce Brazil's commitment with and engagement in the ongoing international efforts to ensure the adequate financing, at the proper speed and necessary scale, to allow developing countries to face the growing challenges posed by climate change.
In concluding, I reaffirm Brazil's continued willingness to cooperate to the maximum extent possible with our fellow Caribbean governments in comprehensive risk and disaster management.
Thank you.
