Discurso do Representante Permanente, Embaixador Sérgio França Danese, na reunião plenária informal para comemorar o 80º aniversário da assinatura da Carta da ONU - 26 de junho de 2025 (texto em inglês)

Eighty years ago, in the aftermath of unimaginable suffering, the adoption of the UN Charter marked the start of a remarkable collective endeavour that helped end colonialism, advanced international law and saved millions from disease and famine.

Brazil is proud to have stood among the 51 founding nations - one of only six to include women in their delegations. Among them was Dr. Bertha Lutz, a pioneering feminist and scientist who was key in enshrining gender equality in the Charter.

At a time when multilateralism is facing unparalleled challenges, when States, through their actions or through the endorsement of the actions of others, violate the very premises at the basis of this organization, it is all the more proper and timely for us to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN charter – not only by observing them, but also by reforming and empowering the organization tasked with their pursuit.

An updated UN must be more representative, more legitimate and thus more effective in delivering on its three pillars: peace and security, with a reformed security council and enhanced peacebuilding and conflict prevention action; sustainable development, to help states prosper fairly and sustainably; and human rights in all their dimensions to the benefit of all. And this should come in the context of an empowered and revitalized General Assembly.

This anniversary is a time for pride in what the UN has brought about, but also for recommitting to its very purpose: make the world a better place for everyone, everywhere.
