Animal Transportation
1. Cats and dogs
In order to be admitted into the Brazilian territory, pets (dogs and cats) must have a veterinary health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian and certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The certificate will only be valid upon declaration by a licensed veterinarian that the animal has been examined within ten (10) days prior to departure and found clinically healthy and free of external parasites.
Rabies vaccination must be done on animals over 3 months of age and, if in the case of the first vaccination, it must be applied at least 30 days prior to the animals’ arrival and must be valid for one year.
According to Decree 6.946, of August 21, 2009, it is no longer necessary that the veterinary health certificate for cats and dogs from Canada be legalized by the Consulate General of Brazil in Montreal.
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture indicates that the highest occurence rate of problems in the transit of companion animals is due to a lack of certification or presentation of certificates that do not meet the Brazilian sanitary certification requirements. More information and a bilingual model of the International Veterinary Certificate, in an editable format, can be accessed at the following electronic address of that Ministry (click here).
