Statement by the Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Norberto Moretti, on Syria
June 29th, 2023
Madam President,
In addition to associating my delegation with the statement by the Representative of Switzerland, I now speak in my national capacity on the political aspects of the conflict in Syria.
We also thank Special Envoy Geir Pedersen for his continuous engagement with key stakeholders.
Madam President,
While the path towards reconciliation presents countless challenges, we we remain convinced that addressing outstanding issues incrementally and collectively can and must make significant steps towards a peaceful resolution.
Since the tragic earthquakes hit Türkiye and Syria last February, there have been some positive developments in the political track, especially within the region. Notably, Syria rejoining the League of Arab States opens up avenues for dialogue which may help address many outstanding issues.
Brazil welcomes the overall commitment to the implementation of Resolution 2254 (2015), in particular the plan for peaceful resolution of the conflict while respecting Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
We appreciate that the joint statement adopted in the 20th round of Astana talks last week reiterates the conviction that there can be no military solution to the Syrian conflict and the commitment to advance a viable and lasting Syrian-led and Syrian-owned, UN-facilitated political process in line with
Resolution 2254.
The joint statement also emphasizes the role of the Syrian Constitutional Committee and called for the 9th round of the Drafting Commission without further delay. For this process to succeed, renewed, sustained and visible political will is needed to change the status quo. It is crucial for the Constitutional Committee to resume its activities, with the firm commitment of all parties to finding common ground and achieving concrete results for the benefit of the Syrian people.
A comprehensive ceasefire is also indispensable - and urgent.
Rebuilding Syria - in all aspects of this daunting task - and enabling its citizens to lead the dignified lives they fully deserve will only be possible through peace and reconciliation, no matter how difficult this may be.
Thank you.
