"Madam Vice President,
I deliver this joint statement on behalf of a group of States.
We express our deep concern regarding the interception by the Israeli forces of vessels belonging to the “Global Sumud Flotilla” - a peaceful convoy carrying most needed humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. We recall the principle of freedom of navigation in international waters, as enshrined in international law.
We deplore this military action, which violates fundamental rights and endangers the physical integrity of humanitarian activists. In this regard, Israel bears full responsibility for the safety and well-being of those detained.
We reiterate our call for the immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions imposed by Israel on the entry and distribution of humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip, in line with its obligations as an occupying power under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Madam Vice President,
Looking ahead, technical cooperation, along with international solidarity, will be indispensable for the strengthening of local capacities and the future reconstruction of Gaza, once a lasting ceasefire is achieved.
Thank you."
