The laboratory's objectives are to study the mineralogy, textural relationships, microchemistry and geochemistry of minerals, as well as the composition of the mineralizing fluids that originated them. These data can be used to develop mineralogical characterization research, or approaches to the role of magmatic and hydrothermal processes, contributing to the development of models that explain the genesis of deposits and that can be applied to mineral prospecting.
Methodologies
- petrography of minerals and ores with high-definition petrographic microscopes (normal and infrared light), coupled to image capture systems;
- microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions in transparent and opaque minerals (using normal and infrared light platforms);
- microchemistry of trace elements with Laser Ablation-ICP-MS;
- studies of mineral cathodoluminescence, coupled to a petrographic microscope, with spectrometer, for carbonates and luminescent minerals;
- studies of silicate melt inclusions that allow us to know the composition of alkaline magmas enriched in Rare Earth elements.
