Carbon Nanostructures Chemistry Laboratory
The Carbon Nanostructures Chemistry Laboratory - LQN performs and supports developments involving the production of graphenes by chemical exfoliation of graphite and the post-synthesis manipulation of carbon nanotubes, including the steps of purification, dispersion, functionalization and incorporation into ceramic and polymer matrices. The LQN is strategically located on the campus of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, being the only strategic laboratory of the National System of Nanotechnology Laboratories (SisNANO) in the state of Minas Gerais.
The LQN has a broad laboratory infrastructure for the chemical manipulation of carbon nanostructures, which includes hoods, an automated and programmable Mettler Toledo EasyMaxTM 102 synthesis reactor, ultrasonic baths, Sonics VCX750 ultrasonic processor, dispersers and homogenizers, centrifuges (Eppendorf 5417C and Thermo Scientific Heraeus Multifuge X1) and ultracentrifuge (Sorval Pro-80), ovens for vacuum and controlled atmosphere heat treatment, equipment for preparing thin films by dip-coating (Electric Blast Drier WEL-30B) and spin-coating (MIT Corporation VTC-100), density gradient former and fractionator (BioComp Instruments 153). For the characterization of carbon nanomaterials, LQN relies on the main analysis techniques: Nicolet-6700 FTIR spectrometer (7,800-600 cm-1), Simultaneous thermal analysis system (TGA/DTA/DSC TA Instruments SDT 2670), High sensitivity thermobalance (TA Instruments Q5000 IR) + interface for coupling to the Nicolet 6700 FTIR, Horiba Jobin-Yvon modular Raman spectrometer with 04 laser lines (488; 514.5, 633 and 785 nm), Optical absorption spectrometer (Shimadzu UV3600, 185-2600 nm), Zeta potential meter, size and molar mass of dispersed particles and molecules in solution Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS - ZEN3600, Metrohm automatic titrator.
