The Gamma Irradiation Laboratory uses gamma irradiation to inhibit incompatible elements in blood or its blood components and preserve the functionality of leukocytes, red blood cells and platelets. This activity is necessary to maximize the success of blood transfusions, since the process prevents transfusion-related graft-versus-host disease: an usually fatal immunological complication in which the donor's immune system attacks the host's tissues.
