Stable Isotope Analysis Laboratory (LAIE)
The Stable Isotope Analysis Laboratory (LAIE) develops, implements and applies isotopic analysis methods in environmental matrices. For this purpose, it uses the techniques Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) and Laser Absorption Spectrometry (LAS) to determine the stable isotopes of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen and their respective isotopic ratios.
The laboratory has a Thermo Finnigan Delta Advantage isotope ratio mass spectrometer coupled to ConFlo IV, Elemental Analyzer (EA) and GasBench II peripherals, and a Liquid Water Isotope Analyzer (LWIA) from ABB's Los Gatos Research as analytical instrumentation. They are used to determine the isotopic shifts dD/1H and d18O/16O in aqueous matrices, and methods are under development for d15N/14N and d13C/12C in solid matrices (e.g. soils and sediments), and d13C/12C in carbonate matrices and dissolved inorganic carbon in aqueous matrices (Dissolved Inorganic Carbon - DIC) of environmental origin.
