Dosimeter Calibration Laboratory
The Dosimeter Calibration Laboratory of the Nuclear Technology Development Center (LCD/CDTN) has the main mission of implementing, maintaining techniques and providing dosimeter calibration services, in order to establish traceability to national standard dosimeters. Since its creation in 1996, it has supported research and development aimed at implementing calibration procedures for dosimeters used in radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and in the area of radiation protection, allowing for better and more reliable knowledge of the doses delivered to patients and workers exposed to radiation.
At the LCD/CDTN, the metrological basis necessary for reliable measurements in X, beta and gamma ionizing radiation fields has been studied, developed and implemented, with the support of projects from funding agencies (international, national or local). With projects approved by FAPEMIG and CNPq, LCD/CDTN developed metrological capacity in beta radiation, installing the Beta Metrology Laboratory, a secondary standard level, for performance tests of detectors in beta radiation fields, mainly for extremity dosimeters used by workers where beta radiation is present. Significant investments were made in LCD/CDTN, through a project by the International Atomic Energy Agency, CNPq and PPSUS-MG, to achieve metrological capacity for X-ray beam dosimetry.
LCD/CDTN was approved in the performance and quality criteria established by the Calibration and Testing Services Assessment Committee (CASEC) of CNEN, which authorized it to provide the calibration service for dosimeters in gamma radiation beams. The LCD/CDTN has become the metrological basis for calibrating area monitors used for environmental monitoring, both at the CDTN and at other institutions, as well as for calibrating and quality controlling personal and environmental dosimeters of the Individual Monitoring Service (SMIE) of the CDTN. Supported by SIBRATEC in the METRORADI/FINEP program, the LCD/CDTN is moving decisively towards obtaining accreditation from CGCRE/INMETRO for the scope of calibration in gamma radiation beam.
