Introduction:

WORKSHOP BRAZIL/U.S. WOMEN IN SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING

The Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education CAPES, along with the U.S. Department of State and the COACh program from the University of Oregon, will organize the II workshop “Building Research Partnerships Between Women Scientists and Engineers in the U.S. and Brazil”, at CAPES, Brasilia, Brazil, October 14-15, 2013.

Background.
As an outcome of the U.S.-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) in March 2012, the idea for developing partnership activities between women scientists in the U.S. and Brazil has been the work of the U.S.-Brazil Steering Group to Advance Women in Science. The Steering Group is comprised of several high profile U.S. and Brazilian scientists, including Geri Richmond, the Director of COACh program, and Denise Neddermeyer (CAPES) by the Brazilian side.

Goals and methodology.
To identify specific problems that need to be addressed to increase and strengthen research collaborations among U.S. and Brazilian female scientists and to increase the number and career access and success of women scientists and engineers through innovative programs and strategies.

Objectives of the Workshop:
Analyze the results of the Survey concerning the sample’s perception of women’s participation in Science, in comparison to pre-existing data on women’s insertion within these spaces. Get to know and evaluate man’s authorities in the fields of engineering and Computer Science considerations on the matter and, through the presentation, discuss the Brazilian reality and propose new actions.

Target Audience:
Women scientists of recognized academic accomplishment from Brazil and the United States, Steering Committee, Authorities in the fields of Science and Gender Policies, Male specialists on the fields and Partner Institutions representatives.
