Seminário da Geofísica fala sobre estudos magnetotelúricos do magmatismo andino

Na quarta-feira, dia 20 de agosto, o Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geofísica do Observatório Nacional (ON/MCTI) realizará uma nova edição de seu Ciclo de Seminário de interesse da comunidade geofísica.

O evento começará às 15h (horário de Brasília) no Auditório DISHO. O tema será: “Magnetotelluric studies of Andean magmatism”. Para falar sobre o assunto foi convidado o Dr. Martyn Unsworth da Univ. of Alberta - Canadá.

Title: Magnetotelluric studies of Andean magmatism.

Abstract: The Central Andes are the textbook example of a mountain range built by plate convergence above a subduction zone. Despite numerous studies, many aspects of magma generation and crustal thickening in this region are not well understood. In this presentation I will describe how magnetotelluric (MT) data are contributing to our understanding of Andean magmatism on two distinct spatial scale: MT studies with a dense grid of stations can image the magmatic system of a volcano in 3-D; other studies have collected MT data on transects crossing the east-west extent of the Central Andes.
