Since 2021, LNA has been part of the "SOUTH POL" team, an original and unprecedented initiative in Astronomy that will conduct a survey of the southern sky in optical polarized light. This partnership involves researchers from the Department of Astronomy at IAG/USP, the Astrophysics Division (DAS) at INPE in Brazil, the Department of Astrophysics at Radboud University in the Netherlands, and the Hiroshima Astrophysical Science Center, Hiroshima University, Mitsubishi Foundation, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo in Japan.

One of the main scientific goals is to study the magnetic field that permeates our galaxy, the Milky Way, and the Magellanic Clouds. This survey has been considered the last major astronomical survey still yet to be conducted. Initially, it will cover the sky south of -15° declination over two to three years of observation time.

In this context, the SOUTH POL team is designing and building a high-precision polarimeter that will be installed on the recently acquired 1-meter telescope, which will be located at the Pico dos Dias Observatory, managed by LNA. The SOUTH POL survey will provide Astrophysics with a unique and highly valuable database. The data will have an immediate impact on several areas, such as Cosmology, Extragalactic Astronomy, the Interstellar Medium of the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, Star Formation, Stellar Envelopes, stellar explosions (GRBs, novae, and supernovae), and the Solar System, among others.
