About
The Brazil Climate and Ecological Transformation Investment Platform – BIP is an initiative from the Brazilian government created with the ambition of expanding investments in ecological transformation towards the decarbonization of the economy, the sustainable use of resources and the improvement of the quality of life of the population. Led by the Ministry of Finance (MF), together with the ministries of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), and Mines and Energy (MME), the Platform supports the Ecological Transformation Plan and other government climate transition and adaptation plans in key sectors. The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) acts as the Secretariat for the Platform, managing the day-to-day operations.
AMBITION
To support the advancement of Brazil's ambitious climate goals, increasing transition investment from all sources in support of the government's climate transition plans in key sectors.
BIP DIFFERENTIALS
Based on the G20 framework for country platforms, the BIP differentiates itself from others in the world in five ways:
| ㅤ | Multisectoral approach The Platform supports three main sectors and sub-sectors for the ecological transformation: Nature-Based Solutions and Bioeconomy, Industry and Mobility, and Energy |
| ㅤ | Focus on financing The Platform connects Brazilian projects to an extensive network of financial institutions to help scale the mobilization of public and private capital, focused on financing programs and projects; |
| ㅤ | Connection between stakeholders The Platform promotes connection between key financial stakeholders (e.g. banks, Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), investment funds) and non-financial stakeholders (e.g. sectoral initiatives, civil society organizations) in the ecological transformation ecosystem. |
Risk mapping and solution proposals Based on the diagnosis of the main sectoral and specific risks of BIP projects, proposals for structural solutions will be developed that contribute to mitigating these risks, unlocking barriers and enabling the financing of projects.s.
Proactive role of a development bank The role of a development bank as the leading institution of the Secretariat of the Brazil Climate and Ecological Transformation Investment Platform (BIP) is a strategic advantage. BNDES is a national benchmark in supporting infrastructure and the productive sector. It holds extensive experience in long-term financing and the structuring of large-scale Project Finance initiatives. Its role as the main source of long-term banking credit in Brazil strengthens BIP’s capacity to enable robust and sustainable investments.
BIP operates in three main ways
