Average airfare in the 3rd quarter was R$ 529.93

The Real Domestic Average Airfare in the third quarter of 2021 was R$ 529.93. According to the Report on Domestic Airfares for the 3rd Quarter 2021 (available only in Portuguese), released on December 1st by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), this value is equivalent to an increase of 45.3% compared to the same period in 2020. The Real Domestic Average Airfare Yield was R$ 0.3986, with an increase of 57.1% compared to the 3rd quarter of the previous year.

In the period from January to September 2021, 5.1% of the tickets were sold with airfares below R$100.00 and 42% below R$300.00. Tickets over R$1,500 represented 2.2% of the total.

Among the main Brazilian companies, which accounted for 99.5% of the demand for domestic air transport of passengers, in comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2021 of the same period of the previous year, the Real Domestic Average Airfares of Azul, Gol and Latam rose 37.2%, 54.2% and 44.1%, respectively. The behavior of the Real Domestic Average Airfare Yield followed the same trend for each company, in which the index for Azul, Gol and Latam increased by 42.6%, 79.2% and 48.4%, respectively.

Air Transport Context

As for the industry’s most significant cost-related indicators, the context of Q3 2021, compared to the same period of the previous year, remains marked by the Covid-19 pandemic. In this scenario, there was an increase in the price of aviation fuel corresponding to 56.6% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2020; the exchange rate was 2.8% lower than in this period; the accumulated inflation over the last 12 months, measured by the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA), corresponded to 10.25%, exceeding the target set by the Central Bank of Brazil, of 3.75% for the year 2021; the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rose 4%; and the airlines kept the offer of flights reduced to adjust the airline network to the demand reality. In relation to the same period in 2020, the supply in the 3rd quarter of 2021 increased 132%, but is still 19.8% less than the supply in the 3rd quarter of 2019.
