Seminário da Astronomia do Observatório Nacional fala sobre Matéria Escura no Universo

No dia 18 de setembro, quinta-feira, a Coordenação de Astronomia e Astrofísica (COAST) do Observatório Nacional – unidade de pesquisa do Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovações (ON/MCTI) – realizará uma nova edição de seu seminário.

O evento acontecerá às 14h (horário de Brasília) no auditório DISHO, e depois ocorrerá o coffee break. O tema será “Dark Matter in the Universe”. Para falar sobre o assunto, foi convidada a palestrante Dra. Katherine Freese, da University of Texas.

Title: Dark Matter in the Universe

Abstract: The nature of the dark matter in the Universe is among the longest and most important outstanding problems in all of modern physics. The ordinary atoms that make up the known universe, from our bodies and the air we breathe to the planets and stars, constitute only 5% of all matter and energy in the cosmos. The remaining 95% is made up of a recipe of 25% dark matter and 70% dark energy, both nonluminous components whose nature remains a mystery.  I’ll begin by discussing the evidence that dark matter is the bulk of the mass in the Universe, and then turn to the hunt to understand its nature.  Leading candidates are fundamental particles including Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), axions, sterile neutrinos, light dark matter, as well as primordial black holes.  I will discuss multiple experimental searches:  at CERN in Geneva; in underground laboratories; with space telescopes; with gravitational wave detectors; and paleodetectors --  ancient minerals from deep underground.  I’ll tell you about our novel idea of Dark Stars, early stars made primarily of hydrogen but powered by dark matter heating, and the possibility that the James Webb Space Telescope has already discovered them.  At the end of the talk, I'll turn to dark energy and its effect on the future of the Universe.

O Ciclo de Seminários de Astronomia e Astrofísica do ON é uma iniciativa da Coordenação de Astronomia e Astrofísica (COAST/ON) que ocorre semanalmente ao longo do ano acadêmico. Em 2025, os seminários estão sendo realizados às quintas-feiras, às 14h30, no auditório Yeda Ferraz, de forma presencial (com algumas exceções). A cada edição, um novo convidado é recebido para apresentar e discutir temas atuais e relevantes nas áreas de astronomia e astrofísica. O evento é aberto ao público e tem como objetivo promover a divulgação científica, estimular o intercâmbio de ideias entre pesquisadores e aproximar a comunidade acadêmica e o público geral das fronteiras do conhecimento astronômico.
