Seminário da Astronomia do Observatório Nacional fala sobre atividade cometária

Na quinta-feira, dia 16 de outubro, a Coordenação de Astronomia e Astrofísica (COAST) do Observatório Nacional – unidade de pesquisa do Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovações (ON/MCTI) – realizará uma nova edição de seu seminário.

O evento acontecerá às 15h (horário de Brasília) no auditório Yeda Ferraz, depois do coffee break, que será às 14h30. O tema será “Comet 67P Churyumov Gerasimenko's complex activity from thermophysical modelling and dynamics”. Para falar sobre o assunto, foi convidado o palestrante Dr. Nicholas Attree (Instituto Astrofísico de Andalucía/Espanha).

Título: “Comet 67P Churyumov Gerasimenko's complex activity from thermophysical modelling and dynamics”

Resumo:  Cometary activity is an interesting, and still not fully explained, phenomenon that directly relates to the material composition and structure of cometary nuclei. Since these are thought to be amongst the most pristine of Solar System objects, understanding their activity gives clues as to the conditions during the epoch of planet formation. I will present the latest results from my work trying to understand the activity of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from a combination of modelling and analysis of data returned by ESA's Rosetta spacecraft. This includes the application of a detailed thermophysical model to points on the surface of 67P, in an effort to reproduce its global emission rates of various gas species and dust. Further, as part of a recent International Space Science Institute team, we have placed empirical constraints on 67P's outgassing distribution by modelling its non-gravitational forces and torques. These result from the reaction force of the escaping gas changing both the comet's rotation axis and rate, as well as its orbital trajectory. Results from both these lines of research point to a complex and varied activity mechanism that has consequences for the modelling of other comets observed from the ground, and to the future target of the upcoming Comet Interceptor mission.

Sobre o Ciclo de Seminários de Astronomia e Astrofísica do ON

O Ciclo de Seminários de Astronomia e Astrofísica do ON é uma iniciativa da Coordenação de Astronomia e Astrofísica (COAST/ON) que ocorre semanalmente ao longo do ano acadêmico. Em 2025, os seminários estão sendo realizados às quintas-feiras, às 14h30, no auditório Yeda Ferraz, de forma presencial (com algumas exceções). A cada edição, um novo convidado é recebido para apresentar e discutir temas atuais e relevantes nas áreas de astronomia e astrofísica. O evento é aberto ao público e tem como objetivo promover a divulgação científica, estimular o intercâmbio de ideias entre pesquisadores e aproximar a comunidade acadêmica e o público geral das fronteiras do conhecimento astronômico.
