Recital combines classical and popular music with violin and accordion on Sunday in the Garden
First presented in 2020 at the Curitiba Music Festival, the recital by the duo Priscila Rato (violin) and Marcelo Caldi (accordion) was inspired by the desire to unite the worlds of classical music and popular repertoire. For the first time in Rio de Janeiro, the couple will present a program on the 5th, at Domingo no Jardim, that mixes pieces by great names in classical music, such as Villa-Lobos, and popular artists, such as Dominguinhos.
The first song in the repertoire - “Bachianas 4 - 1st movement” - already conveys the atmosphere of the concert, as it is performed in its traditional arrangement, then transforming into a marcha-rancho. The northeastern songbook, in turn, is celebrated with “Isso aqui tá bom demais” by Dominguinhos and Nando Cordel, “Casamento da raposa” by Gerson Filho, João Bandeira, and Pedro Sertanejo, and “Lamento nordestino” by Oswaldinho do Acordeon and Roberto Stanganelli.
The recital also features pieces by Caldi, such as the unreleased “Novidade,” “Choro em Curitiba,” “Xote antifa,” and “Junho é mês de festa.” Marcelo's collaborations with Silvério Pontes are also part of the show, such as “Maxixe da Juju,” a tribute to Júlia, daughter of Priscila and Marcelo, and “Piazzolla no choro,” a tribute to the great Argentine genius Astor Piazzolla, created in a typically Brazilian language.
Piazzolla is also remembered in his great success, “Adiós, nonino,” dialoguing with the musical influences of Marcelo, son of Argentine pianist Estela Caldi. From the typical violin repertoire, the couple performs “Salut D'amour” by Edward Elgar, usually played on violin and piano, and which, this time, will feature the accordion. Also noteworthy are two popular European songs, “Romênia” (author unknown), and “Ballade Nocturne” by André Astier, in the French musette style, “half Belgian, half French, half gypsy,” as Caldi points out.
Violinist Priscila Rato is currently concertmaster of the Bahia Symphony Orchestra (OSBA). She graduated from the School of Music at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and then furthered her studies at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland, in the class of Maxim Vengerov and Liviu Prunaru (concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam). During this period, she was a member of the Camerata Menuhin, performing concerts in Portugal, Monaco, and Switzerland. He holds a master's degree in music from the Federal University of Bahia. In Brazil, as a soloist, he has played with the Bahia Symphony Orchestra, the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra, the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra, the Camerata Antiqua de Curitiba, the Amazonas Chamber Orchestra, the Ulbra Chamber Orchestra, Johann Sebastian Rio, among others.
Marcelo Caldi is one of today's most accomplished musicians. A pianist, composer, symphonic arranger, producer, singer, conductor, and musical director, he has become widely recognized as one of the most important accordionists of his generation, carrying on the precious legacy of masters such as Luiz Gonzaga, Orlando Silveira, Chiquinho do Acordeon, Sivuca, Dominguinhos, Oswaldinho, and others.
He has performed as a soloist in concerts with the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra, Bahia Symphony Orchestra, Cesgranrio Symphony Orchestra, UFF Symphony Orchestra, Campinas Symphony Orchestra, and Recife Symphony Orchestra, also creating original arrangements for these ensembles. He composed “Alma carioca,” an original symphonic piece for the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra, in honor of Rio de Janeiro’s 450th anniversary (2015), and “Homenagem a Sivuca” (Tribute to Sivuca) for the Cesgranrio Symphony Orchestra (2017). Caldi won the Aldir Blanc Law award for the release of the book “Vem tocar sanfona” (Come play the accordion), which brings together 20 unpublished scores by Caldi, in various styles, written exclusively for the accordion. He has participated in the most important instrumental music festivals in Brazil and has taken his work to countries such as Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, and Japan.
The performance will take place at 11 a.m. in front of the bust of Dom João, and admission is free. Visitors only pay the entrance fee to the arboretum. In case of rain, the performance will be moved to the Galpão das Artes.
