The group formed by Domenico Botelho (double bass), Ciro Magnani (piano), Joe Zé Pepe (trumpet), and Paulo Diniz (drums) brings its original project to Domingo no Jardim on January 18. The show, which premiered this year in Rio, has already been performed at Teatro Cândido Mendes in Ipanema and Blue Note in Copacabana. The repertoire combines contemporary jazz with Brazilian music and world music.
Domenico Botelho is a bassist and composer from Rio de Janeiro, with a master's degree in Jazz Performance and Jazz Composition from the New England Conservatory (Boston, USA). During his training, he studied with Dave Holland, Jerry Bergonzi, and Cecil McBee. He was also a member of the NEC Jazz Orchestra, performing alongside important names on the international scene, including Antonio Sanchez, Luciana Souza, Alan Pasqua, and Cecile McLorin Salvant. The Domenico Botelho Ensemble project is the synthesis of his musical and academic experiences.
Trumpeter Joe Zé Pepe was born in California, USA, and fell in love with the sound of Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, and Lee Morgan at an early age. He has his own jazz and Brazilian music projects and has played with various groups and artists in Rio, such as drummer Teo Lima, trombonist Josiel Konrad, and saxophonist Tunico. He also teaches at the Favela Brass project, a music education program for children and teenagers from communities and public schools in Rio.
Rio de Janeiro pianist Ciro Magnani studied at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music. He has won several classical piano competitions in Brazil and performed at festivals in Brazil and the United Kingdom, as well as giving concerts in Portugal and the United States, collaborating with musicians such as Dan Balmer, Matt Sazima, Ben Harris, Jorge Oscar, and Rafael Abdalla. With a master's degree in Piano Performance and Jazz Studies from the University of Oregon under the guidance of Alexandre Dossin and Keith Brown, Magnani cites pianists Cesar Camargo Mariano, Amaro Freitas, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, and Oscar Peterson as his main influences.
Drummer Paulo Diniz completes the ensemble with his extensive experience in Brazilian and instrumental music. Son of renowned drummer Paulo Diniz, he grew up immersed in the musical universe, developing a sophisticated and versatile rhythmic language. He has accompanied great names such as João Bosco, Leny Andrade, Alma Thomas, and Indiana Nomma, establishing himself as a prominent musician in various formations and styles. He has also performed alongside artists and instrumentalists such as David Wells, pianist David Feldman, David Zinno, and Idriss Boudrioua, among others.
The performance at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden will take place at 11 a.m. in front of the bust of D. João. In case of rain, it will be canceled. The show is free, with only the arboretum entrance fee charged.
