FUNAG publishes book that reveals the ideological and political roots of Brazilian diplomacy in the 19th century
The Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation has just published the book Formação do Pensamento Internacional Brasileiro: liberais e conservadores na construção diplomática do Brasil (1822-1889) [Shaping of Brazilian International Thought: Liberals and Conservatives in Brazil’s Diplomatic Construction (1822-1889)], written by the researcher and professor Elizeu Santiago Tavares de Sousa. The book explores the different currents of thought that shaped Brazil’s foreign policy in the 19th century, focusing on the disputes between liberals and conservatives and how the debates were reflected in different visions about the country’s role in the world.
The author analyzes the interaction between the tradition of the Portuguese Empire and the new ideas of the period, revealing the complexities and contradictions of Brazilian international thought. Elizeu also demonstrates how the actions of political agents, their ambitions and ideologies were connected to power structures and historical legacies, influencing important decisions for Brazil.
The publication is available for free download on FUNAG’s digital library. The printed version will soon be available for purchase in the official online store.
