Mapa rejects Carrefour CEO's remarks on meat produced in Mercosur

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) strongly reaffirms the quality of Brazilian agribusiness, which adheres to rigorous national legislation and international best practices, aligning with global standards.

In this regard, Mapa firmly rejects the statements made by Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard concerning meat produced in Mercosur countries.

Mapa’s rigorous agricultural defense system ensures Brazil’s position as the world’s largest exporter of beef and poultry. The country maintains trade relations with approximately 160 nations, consistently meeting the highest international standards. For more than 40 years, the European Union has purchased and certified the quality and safety of Brazilian meat products.

Brazil also upholds one of the world’s most stringent environmental legislations and operates with full transparency in the agricultural sector. As part of its proactive efforts, Brazil has submitted proposals to the European Union for electronic systems addressing the initial requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), demonstrating its commitment to traceable and sustainable production. Furthermore, Brazil’s private traceability systems are widely recognized and approved by European markets.

Mapa expresses disappointment at such statements, which appear to be driven by protectionist motives, misleading consumers without any technical foundation to justify the claims.

While Mapa does not perceive a coordinated effort by French companies to obstruct the finalization of the Mercosur-European Union Agreement—recently discussed at the G20 Summit— the Ministry will not tolerate unfounded attempts to undermine the recognized quality and safety of Brazilian products or the country’s environmental commitments.

Once again, Mapa emphasizes Brazilian agribusiness’s dedication to producing high-quality, safe, and sustainable food, playing a vital role in ensuring global food and nutritional security.
