China approves 21 Brazilian companies for sesame exports

China has cleared 21 Brazilian companies to export sesame, a key gain for the nation’s agribusiness. The world’s leading sesame importer, China consumes 38.4% of the global supply, making it a prime market for Brazilian producers.

This breakthrough came during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Brazil in late 2024, with final approval for the exporters confirmed last week after routine accreditation. Brazil holds seventh place in worldwide sesame exports with a 5.31% share, led by Mato Grosso, Goiás, Pará, and Tocantins, with Bahia, Minas Gerais, Maranhão, and Rondônia on the rise.

In 2023, China imported US$1.53 billion in sesame, cementing its role as the top buyer. In Brazil, sesame thrives as a second-crop star, fueling agribusiness diversity and growth.

This step expands Brazil’s reach in international markets and strengthens its agricultural output.
