Brazil Receives International Recognition by the World Organisation for Animal Health as a Foot-and-Mouth Disease-Free Country Without Vaccination
Foot-and-Mouth Disease-Free Country Without Vaccination
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Carlos Fávaro attended the official ceremony today (June 6) in Paris, where Brazil was formally recognized by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) as a Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)-Free Country Without Vaccination. The certification was granted during the 92nd General Session of the World Assembly of WOAH Delegates.
This milestone, which applies to the entire national territory, represents a historic achievement for Brazilian livestock and a testament to the country’s commitment to animal health. The recognition strengthens Brazil’s position as a trusted and safe supplier of animal protein on the global stage. By opening new doors for agricultural exports, it will help promote sustainable development, enhance global food security, and contribute to international well-being.
The certification confirms the successful implementation of Brazil’s National Foot-and-Mouth Disease Surveillance Program, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The program has been carried out in close cooperation with federal and state authorities and the livestock sector. Over the past decade, this effort involved strategic investments and a series of progressive actions—including the strengthening of official veterinary services, modernization of surveillance systems, and the transition from FMD-free zones with vaccination to zones free without vaccination.
The Brazilian government reaffirms its ongoing commitment to safeguarding national animal health and to complying with the highest international standards in animal health and agricultural trade.
