Research Lab on Security, Development and Defense (LAB-SDD)
The LAB-SDD, linked to the Extension, Research and Postgraduate Division (DEPPG) of the Brazilian Defense College, is a research group that aims to stimulate, develop and disseminate research based on the Security, Development and Defense (SDD) tripod, under a multidisciplinary approach and open to free debate, bringing together civilian and military researchers. Therefore, in addition to the research agenda, the group regularly promotes academic activities such as webinars using different approaches, extension courses aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate audiences at partner higher education institutions and the annual organization a symposium for the presentation and discussion of ongoing research.
Highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of the group, LAB-SDD is structured into three lines of research:
Line 1 - GEOPOLITICS, INTERNATIONAL SECURITY AND DEFENSE DIPLOMACY
Coordination:
Prof. Dr. Leonardo Ulian Dall Evedove
Prof. Dr. Wellington Dantas Amorim
This line brings a theoretical and conceptual debate based on the premise that the area of International Relations and Geopolitics are crucial for knowledge and studies on the regional security complex, when working on issues of South America and Regional Integration as points of interest for Defense in the strategic surroundings; Geopolitics – origins, model and future, with a debate about geopolitical theories and the changes and reconfigurations of the geopolitical perspective in the international order; the research project focused on Sino-American relations – covering aspects of International Relations and Geopolitics as an impact of the relations between the two great powers and, finally, studies on migratory flows and refugees in Brazil.
Keywords: Geopolitics; International Security; South America; Defense Studies.
Line 2 – HUMAN DIMENSION OF DEFENSE STUDIES
Coordination:
Prof. Dr. Viviane Machado Caminha
Cmdr. Nádia Xavier Moreira
The line describes the human dimension as the moral, social, cognitive and physical aspects that permeate the military component, through subjects, groups and/or the institutional environment. Living in a world of uncertainty, it is possible to identify the transformations in the context of war and the operational environment that bring challenges to the formation of the military ethos of combatants, to sustaining the emotional intelligence of leaders and to the social protection of military personnel. Therefore, their studies are focused on understanding the social, psychological, socio-anthropological, historical, educational, organizational and cultural aspects that can impact, positively or negatively, on military performance and the readiness of the “soldier of the future”. To this end, they are focused on the consequences of military activity, the daily lives of its members and, in some cases, their families, involving the areas of Human, Social, Applied Social Sciences and Health.
Keywords: Human; Performance; Armed forces; Defense Studies.
Line 3 - GOVERNANCE, PUBLIC POLICIES, NATIONAL SECURITY AND RESILIENCE
Coordination:
Prof. Dr. Peterson Ferreira da Silva
Cel. José Roberto Pinho de Andrade Lima
The line addresses the various intersectoral relationships between public policies and national security and defense, such as inter-organizational cooperation; training, development and education of people; governance mechanisms; capabilities prioritization; the relationship between ST&I, armed forces, acquisitions, logistics and defense industry; event management involving CBRN agents; national resilience in the face of attacks and disasters, as well as bioprotection and monitoring of health emergencies.
Keywords: Governance; Public policy; National security; Resilience.
The research lines have their own agenda of activities, conducted by the respective coordinators and published annually. Participation in LAB-SDD is subject to compliance with academic production metrics and, in the case of external members, formal indication of research line coordinators. Currently, the leadership of LAB-SDD is with Prof. Dr. Viviane Machado Caminha and Prof. M.S. Érika R. Furtado. For more information, contact us via email: laboratoriodepesquisa.sdd@gmail.com.
