History
In 1973, in the context of the transfer of the main federal institutions to the new capital of Brazil (Brasília), the first attempt was made to transfer the Escola Superior de Guerra (ESG) from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília (DF), through a project to build a new headquarters that would be built near UNB, on the banks of Lago Norte. However, the project was not carried out and was interrupted in 1976.
To meet a demand of the National Defense Strategy (END), launched in 2008, which foresees, with regard to teaching activities, greater integration and participation of the civil government sectors in the discussion of topics related to Defense, the Ministry of Defense (MD) presented a new plan to transfer the ESG to Brasília, thus increasing, through the academic environment and institutes and entities linked to defense matters, this important mindset in Brazilian society. In 2011, the Brasília Campus of the Escola Superior de Guerra was created, which began to occupy some rooms in the Annex Building of the MD.
Since the structure occupied in the MD Annex was not sufficient to meet all the School's demands, in 2015, the construction of a new headquarters was conceived, in Block 903 of Asa Sul. However, due to the high values required for construction, the project awaited the availability of resources until, on January 1, 2019, the Higher School of Tax Administration (ESAF) was officially extinguished and its structure incorporated into the National School of Public Administration (ENAP), which became part of the newly created Ministry of Economy and, with that, the campus occupied by ESAF, headquartered in DF-001, in Jardim Botânico, was offered to the MD.
In December 2019, the ESG Brasília Campus was transferred to the new facilities in Jardim Botânico, becoming, on October 1, 2021, the Escola Superior de Defesa (ESD).
