Lilianne Nakazono, tecnologista do Observatório Nacional (ON/MCTI). O seminário terá como tema “Quasar studies in the era of large photometric surveys” e será realizado presencialmente no Auditório Yeda Ferraz, no ON, às 15h. O coffee break será às 14h30.

Título: Quasar studies in the era of large photometric surveys.
Resumo: Multi-band photometric surveys provide an efficient means of identifying and characterizing quasars across large areas of the sky. The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) combines five broad and seven narrow filters, so its photometry samples spectral features that broad-band surveys cannot resolve. This seminar reviews our machine-learning applications of S-PLUS data to quasar science. These range from the classification of point sources into stars, quasars, and galaxies to quasar photometric redshift estimation. For the redshifts, we used both narrow-band, ultraviolet, and infrared photometry and, more recently, tabular foundation models that require no task-specific training. In our latest work, we use narrow-band photometric variability to select changing-look AGN candidates, which transition between type 1 and type 2 classifications. These results show that narrow-band photometry can deliver quasar samples, redshifts, and variability diagnostics that both guide efficient spectroscopic follow-up and support scientific analyses on their own.
