PRESS RELEASE N. 153
Signing of Air Services Agreement between Brazil and the United Kingdom — Joint press release (MFA/MPor/ANAC)
On April 10th, the new Brazil-United Kingdom Air Services Agreement was signed by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Maria Laura da Rocha, and the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Brazil, Stephanie Al-Qaq.
The result of joint efforts between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor), and the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), the new agreement allows Brazilian and British airlines to freely determine the offering of bilateral flights for passengers and cargo.
By updating the bilateral legal framework of 1946, the new agreement includes the right to transport passengers and cargo between the territories of Brazil and the United Kingdom and the territory of a third State, on flights originating from or destined for the signatory countries (rights known in the sector as the 'Fifth Freedom of the Air').
Additionally, the agreement extends permission for cargo service operations, enabling airlines of both countries to conduct international cargo transportation without the requirement that the operation begins or ends in the company´s country of origin (known as the 'Seventh Freedom of the Air').
The new agreement, which will be forwarded for consideration to the National Congress, will provide greater legal certainty for companies operating routes between Brazil and the United Kingdom, thereby contributing to increasing bilateral trade and tourism flow.
