PRESS RELEASE N.91
Commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials
An event to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC) will be held o July 19, at the Itamaraty Palace, with the participation of Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos França, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina, Felipe Solá, ABACC's Secretary Dr. Elena Maceiras, and ABACC's Deputy Secretary Dr. Marco Marzo.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Marcos Pontes, and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, who is on an official visit to Brazil, will also attend the event.
ABACC was created by means of the Agreement between Brazil and Argentina on the Exclusively Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy, signed on July 18, 1991, in Guadalajara, Mexico.
ABACC is the centerpiece of the nuclear safeguards system applicable to Brazil and Argentina and was the result of successful diplomatic and technical engineering. Its establishment allowed both countries to overcome mistrust in the nuclear field and to forge a path of transparency and cooperation.
This system, unique in the world, goes beyond normal comprehensive safeguard agreements and allows both countries to carry out, through ABACC, reciprocal inspections in nuclear facilities, which are complemented by IAEA inspections.
The robustness and reliability of this verification model, based on the cooperative work of two international agencies, makes the nuclear programs of both Brazil and Argentina subject to the highest standards of verification and transparency.
