Forest fires: Brazil sends humanitarian aid to Ecuador
In a gesture of solidarity to strengthen the fight against forest fires, Brazil made a humanitarian donation to Ecuador of 9 weather stations; 32 plastic containers (with a 20-liter holding capacity, each), to transport water in community areas; and 2,000 chlorine tablets for water treatment.
The formal act of delivery of said donation took place on March 21st, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador, in Quito. Chancellor Gabriela Sommerfeld, the National Undersecretary for Risk Management, Ms. Andrea Hermenegildo, and the Ambassador of Brazil to Ecuador, Mr. Flavio Damico, participated in event, as well as diplomats from the two countries.
During the act, Chancellor Sommerfeld highlighted the partnership between the two countries within the scope of the "Amazon Without Fire Program", and reaffirmed the common commitment to overcoming the challenges posed by climate change. Furthermore, she brought to the attention the fact that Brazil provided support to Ecuador during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Ms. Hermenegildo thanked the Government of Brazil for the humanitarian gesture, and highlighted how important the materials donated were to strengthen climate monitoring actions, and improve access to water in regions impacted by forest fires.
Ambassador Flavio Damico stressed that the Brazilian humanitarian assistance abides by the principles of the United Nations for international humanitarian cooperation, which prioritize emergency actions coupled with the recovery and economic development of communities affected by disasters. "And that is the reason why we procured the goods we donated in the national markets in Ecuador so as to strengthen the local economy," he said.
The action was coordinated by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil (MRE), and supported by the Brazilian Embassy in Quito.
