Brazilian Government and FAO facilitate International Forum on Urban Agrifood Systems in Peru
The Government of Brazil, represented by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC/MRE) and the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS), together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation of Peru, are holding this week the International Forum on Urban Agrifood Systems in Peru, with live broadcast and presence of experts from seven countries in the region (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru), as well as a representative from the Caribbean countries.
The main topics to be addressed include the approach to urban food systems, and sustainability and resilience in urban planning, as well as a presentation about the Feeding the Cities Program, and an exhibition of initiatives developed in Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, and other activities.
This International Forum is part of the Technical Week on Urban Agrifood Systems, which aims to strengthen capacities, exchange experiences, and generate synergies for mobilization of resources, and encouragement of an exchange of good practices between countries in the region regarding the creation of sustainable and healthy food environments.
At the opening ceremony of the event, the Minister Counselor of the Brazilian Embassy in Peru, Mr. Felipe Carlos Antunes, stressed that the Brazilian involvement in actions of this nature evidences the high priority that Brazil gives to combating hunger and overcoming poverty, through South-South cooperation. "The Brazilian experience in food security that has been acquired as Brazil has implemented innovative public policies, is an example of something that may be adapted and implemented according to the local context of each partner country," he stressed. "Agrifood systems are connected to territories and people. This interdependence creates unique opportunities," said Ms. Corinna Hawkes, Director of the FAO Division of Agrifood Systems and Food Safety.
Ms. Lilian dos Santos Rahal, the National Secretary for Food and Nutrition Security (SESAN), with the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger (MDS), brought to the attention the fact that "the accelerated urbanization process gives rise to the urgent challenge of transforming food systems to ensure access to healthy food in the cities, where the majority of the population lives in a situation of food insecurity".
On May 7th, the participating experts will carry out a technical visit in Peru, in order to learn about experiences related to food system within the urban-rural continuum of Lima. The visit will take place in the town of Pachacámac, southeast of Lima. On the 8th, it will be a day for planning and identification of opportunities for cooperation and mobilization of resources, aiming at the transformation of the urban agrifood system.
This technical week in Peru is part of the activities of the Project "Strengthening the Regional Agenda of Food Systems for the Urban-Rural Continuum in Latin America and the Caribbean", financed by the Brazilian Government, and developed under the partnership of ABC, MDS, and FAO, within the scope of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program.
