Brazil and UN System agencies celebrate United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation in Brasilia

September 12 is United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation. The date has cemented itself as an important reference point for promoting partnerships in the Global South and for highlighting the results and impacts of international cooperation initiatives between developing countries and between them and international organizations.

In Brazil, the date will be celebrated on September 10, at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia, on the joint initiative of the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), with the Rome-based United Nations agencies (RBAs): the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Program (WFP).

Under the slogan “Global partners, local actions: strengthening nutrition and food security through trilateral South-South cooperation”, the celebration will highlight previous achievements and shared strategic commitments to fighting hunger and poverty through South-South cooperation.

The event will be attended by authorities from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE); the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming (MDA); the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger (MDS); and the National Education Development Fund (FNDE/MEC), as well as representatives from the FAO, IFAD and the WFP.

The Brazilian government, through the ABC and in partnership with various ministries and public bodies, has played a key role on the international stage over the last few decades, through South-South and trilateral cooperation projects that have contributed to the sustainable and inclusive development of the nations of the global South.

The Rome-based FAO, IFAD and WFP work closely together to promote food security, sustainable agricultural development and the eradication of hunger in the world. These United Nations agencies have been key partners for Brazil in the implementation of innovative South-South and trilateral cooperation programs, through which successful Brazilian public policies on food and nutrition security and the fight against poverty and vulnerabilities are shared with partner countries in the developing world, benefiting millions of people around the world.
