ABC on TV: documentary shows the impact of Brazilian cooperation on cotton production in Africa

The first documentary in the series will be screened this week, and highlights the impact of the Cotton Shire-Zambezi Project on cotton production in Mozambique and Malawi. 

Cotton Shire-Zambezi Project 

The Shire River, the largest river in Malawi, flows into the Zambezi River in Mozambique. It was out of this confluence that the Shire-Zambezi Project was conceived, an initiative that unites Brazil and these two countries to strengthen the sustainable cotton production of smallholder and medium-sized farmers. 

Since 2014, Brazil has been sharing knowledge and technology to increase yields, fight rural poverty, and advance food security. The initiative was developed in partnership with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). 

"When farmers get an increase in their income, the first benefit they reap is the possibility to have a diversified diet," says Mr. Edson Tanga, from the Cotton and Oilseeds Institute of Mozambique (IAOM). 

This cooperation effort merges Brazilian sustainable technologies with traditional African knowledge to boost the economy, and change the lives of people. In addition to increasing production, the project encouraged the participation of women and young people, which expands even more its social impact.
