XII High Level Dialogue on Human Rights between Brazil and the European Union – Joint Statement

The XII High Level Dialogue on Human Rights between Brazil and the European Union took place on July 5^th, 2024, in Brasília.

The Secretary of Multilateral Political Affairs, Ambassador Carlos Márcio Cozendey, was the head of the Brazilian delegation. The EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Ambassador Olof Skoog, led the European side.

The Dialogue was a renewed opportunity for a fruitful exchange of views on bilateral and multilateral issues related to the promotion and protection of human rights.

Brazil and the EU addressed topics of mutual interest, such as gender equality, migrants and refugees, racial discrimination, LGBTQIA+ rights, Indigenous peoples, human rights defenders, information integrity and hate speech, and business and human rights. They shared best practices and challenges faced in their territories in a truthful and constructive manner.

The second part of the Dialogue was devoted to discussing human rights developments in multilateral fora. In view of the upcoming debates at the United Nations Human Rights Council, of which Brazil is a member, and at the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, they addressed specific country situations, as well as other relevant issues, including the renewal of the International Decade on the Rights of People of African Descent.

The Brazil-EU Civil Society Meeting, held on June 28^th, preceded the Dialogue. It was a unique opportunity for civil society members and human rights organizations to discuss how they can contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights in Brazil and in the European Union, particularly, regarding the protection of the most vulnerable groups. Civil society have been playing a central role consolidating the partnership on human rights between Brazil and the EU since its beginning.

The twelfth edition of the Dialogue showed the commitment of both sides to cooperate and to continue to uphold and advance human rights and address violations. It is a commitment based on shared values and principles, such as democracy, human rights, fundamental freedoms, social inclusion and sustainable development.

Brazil and the EU also renewed their pledge to engage in regular interactions and operational follow-up, deepening our long-lasting cooperation.

The next Dialogue will be held in Brussels, in 2025.
