Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira will receive, on June 28, the Vice-President and Foreign Minister of Guyana, Carl Greenidge, and the Minister of Infrastructure of that country, David Patterson. During the meeting, the main projects and initiatives of the bilateral agenda in the areas of technical cooperation, infrastructure, trade and investments, as well as themes of common interest of the regional and global agendas, will be addressed.
In the area of cooperation, Brazil is taking steps to launch, at the request of Guyana, a cooperation project to be carried out by the Brazilian Armed Forces, to drill artesian wells in areas of Guyana that face long periods of drought. During the visit, a Complementary Agreement for cooperation in agriculture will be signed, focusing on seed certification, pest risk analysis and the modernization of the phytosanitary services of Guyana.
The two sides will also discuss the possibilities of cooperation in the area of petrol, given the recent discoveries in the coast of Guyana. And the Guyanese interest in learning the Brazilian experience and qualifying for future exploration and production of hydrocarbons.
In the area of infrastructure, the priority of both countries is the paving project of the 420 kilometer stretch of the Lethem-Linden road, which connects the state of Roraima to the Guyanese capital, Georgetown. The project will facilitate the access of agricultural exports of the states of Amazonas and Roraima to the North American by Caribbean markets, by shortening the distance between this region in Brazil and the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, it will be a powerful factor to boost the economy in the border region, and it will contribute to increase trade and investments between the two countries. During the visit, the Brazil-Guyana Air Services Agreement will also be signed, which will multiply the air routes between the two countries.
In 2016, trade totaled US$ 31.77 million, with US$ 25.82 million of Brazilian exports and US$ 5.95 of imports from the neighboring country.
