The President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research of the Swiss Federal Council, Johann Schneider-Ammann, will visit Brazil from August 4 to 7. On the 4th, he will be received, in Brasilia, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Serra. On the 5th, in Rio de Janeiro, he will participate in the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
At the meeting in Brasilia, Minister Serra and President Ammann will review the bilateral agenda and regional and multilateral issues, as well as ways and means to increase trade and investment flows between Brazil and Switzerland.
Strategic partners since 2008, Brazil and Switzerland have a history of intense bilateral cooperation, with emphasis on reciprocal investments, the recovery of financial assets and a longstanding partnership in science, technology and innovation. Switzerland, along with Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, is also a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), with which Mercosur is currently negotiating with a view to the launching of trade negotiations between the two blocs.
Brazil is the main destination for Swiss direct investments in Latin America and the Caribbean: in 2015, this amount reached US $ 1.1 billion, 49% of the total invested in the region. In the same year, bilateral trade amounted to US$ 4.27 billion.
